Beech Celebrates Black History Month With Live Broadcast on WURD 900-AM Radio
Beech Community Services celebrated Black History Month, with a live broadcast of the Thera Martin Show on WURD 900-AM Radio, from the Beech/NBC-TV Studios at 1500 Cecil B. Moore Ave.
Among the featured guests was Kenneth Scott, Beech President, who discussed some of Beech’s latest projects, such as the Cecil B. Moore Homeownership Zone’s approximately 1000 single family homes being built at 20th & Montgomery Ave. Christine Brown, Director of Beech Community Services, announced the 3rd Annual “Jazz on the Ave” series, which includes a health fair sponsored by the 23rd Police District & Project Home, scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2009, from noon to 7pm.
Gale Y. Given, President of Verizon PA., discussed the City’s recent approval of its fiber optic cable system for Philadelphia and the upcoming jobs and minority vendor opportunities.
Other speakers included: Shirley Gregory, District Dir. For U.S. Rep. Robert A. Brady, 5th District Councilman Darrell Clarke, Dr. Diane Turner, Curator of the Charles Blockson Collection at Temple, James Scott, Dir. of Community Engagement, School District of Phila., Officer Dixon, 23rd Police District and Rev. William B. Moore, Pastor of Tenth Memorial Baptist Church.
Black History Month, which is traditionally preceded by the celebration of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, got a boost this year, when it coincided with the inauguration of the nation’s first African American president, giving Americans of all races a special sense of pride and excitement. Barack H. Obama, became the 44th President of the United States of America, when he was inaugurated on January 20th, 2009, before more than a million people in Washington, D. C. on the steps of the U.S. Capitol.
